DESCRIPTION

Case studies in tectonics' focusses on various tectonic settings on a global scale. We will explore the coupling between lithosphere-scale processes and the structural geological and geomorphological expression in a number of different regions around the world. We will discuss practical examples of extensional, compressional and strike slip settings during different geological time periods. We will dive into the details of Archaean and Paleoproterozoic cratons, extensional tectonic settings (rift systems, break-up, spreading, back-arc dynamics), compressional tectonic settings (orogenies, ophiolite obduction, subduction systems, fold-and-thrust belts), strike-slip tectonic settings (transform faults, continental escape, pull-apart basins and pop-up structures, quenching) and we will revise already learned structural geological and introduce niche-examples of structural geological techniques to unravel the tectonic history of specific regions. Examples on all continents will be discussed during this course.

Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) awards credits based on the ECTS system. Contact hours listed under a course description may vary due to the combination of lecture-based and independent work required for each course therefore, CEA's recommended credits are based on the ECTS credits assigned by VU Amsterdam. 1 ECTS equals 28 contact hours assigned by VU Amsterdam.
