DESCRIPTION

Advancements in technology are increasingly disrupting the practice of law across all of its areas of practice. This course looks at how different types of technology are used by different actors in the legal field. The course incorporates legal technology and design thinking skills so that students not only understand how technology works, but how it can address certain legal and societal problems together with its limitations.

The Legal Technology course enables students to understand the role that technology plays in legal practice and in society. Students consider how the technology works and gain skills to design and implement technology in a considered, ethical, and sustainable manner. The content of the course includes different sub-fields of law and is not limited to a private law dimension. Through this course, students learn about the different uses of legal technology from different areas of law and practice. It is therefore suitable for students with a range of interests and focus areas.

Legal technology areas are discussed within the context of a different ?case study? area of application. This approach eschews a focus on one area of law, such as legal service delivery, to allow students to understand the different uses of technology across law in a broader sense. In this sense, students reflect on how and why these technologies are being used and any (un)intended consequences resulting from them.

Contact hours listed under a course description may vary due to the combination of lecture-based and independent work required for each course therefore, CEA's recommended credits are based on the ECTS credits assigned by VU Amsterdam. 1 ECTS equals 28 contact hours assigned by VU Amsterdam.
