DESCRIPTION
People read for enjoyment, but also because they have to participate effectively in a society in which written communication plays an essential role. In school, students read both literary texts and texts that allow them to learn content knowledge. Not every student is a competent, motivated reader. In this course, we examine how reading skills develop during the course of children's and adolescents' lives, to what extent this development is affected by personal characteristics such as motivation and which role families and schools play. Themes that are discussed are: emergent literacy, reading motivation, reading comprehension and ICT.
Contact hours listed under a course description may vary due to the combination of lecture-based and independent work required for each course therefore, CEA's recommended credits are based on the ECTS credits assigned by VU Amsterdam. 1 ECTS equals 28 contact hours assigned by VU Amsterdam.
