DESCRIPTION

This course introduces students to the books of Scripture, addressing issues related to their collection as Scripture, the question of "canon," their translation into Greek (the Septuagint), and their interpretation as understood by the early Christian tradition and the Orthodox tradition thereafter, in both its liturgical and theological dimensions. This course will also explore how what is found in the Orthodox tradition relates to trends in Western scriptural scholarship, asking both what we might learn from such exegesis as well as what critique or correction a traditional, patristic approach might offer.

Contact hours listed under a course description may vary due to the combination of lecture-based and independent work required for each course therefore, CEA's recommended credits are based on the ECTS credits assigned by VU Amsterdam. 1 ECTS equals 28 contact hours assigned by VU Amsterdam.
