CEA CAPA is thrilled to share a milestone that honors both our history and our future: the creation of the John Christian Leadership Scholarship, named for one of the visionary founders of CAPA: The Education Abroad Network. 

This scholarship celebrates John Christian’s remarkable leadership and his lifelong passion for empowering students who not only dream big but lead boldly. Throughout his career, John championed opportunities for students to grow as global citizens and leaders - and now, his legacy will inspire the next generation. 

What Makes This Scholarship Special? 

Beginning in Fall 2026, five students studying at the CEA CAPA London Center will each receive a $5,000 scholarship, totaling $25,000 annually.  

Why London? Because it’s where John’s vision for transformative learning abroad first took root - and where countless students have discovered their own leadership potential. 

Scholarship recipients will be selected for qualities that define true leadership: 

• Commitment to their university, community, or extracurricular activities 

• Creativity and self-awareness 

• Ability to deliver results and inspire others 

More Than Just Funding 

This isn’t just a scholarship - it’s a leadership experience. Each cohort will collaborate with a faculty or staff mentor at the London Center to design a leadership program or activity during their semester abroad. When they return home, recipients will serve as ambassadors, encouraging future applicants and sharing their stories. 

And here’s the cherry on top: one student from each cohort will attend CEA CAPA’s annual Woolf Symposium to present their leadership development outcomes - a chance to shine on a global stage. 

Why This Matters 

Developing the next generation of leaders is central to CEA CAPA’s mission. This scholarship reflects our gratitude for John Christian’s vision and our excitement for the students who will carry it forward. 

As John himself says: 

“I studied abroad in London in spring of 1986. Little did I know that this would completely change my life and direct my career in learning abroad. My hope is that the scholarships will have the same impact on our cohort as they also learn in London.”
