CEA CAPA is seeking submissions for the 12th volume in its Occasional Publications series, titled “Here Be Dragons”: Navigating Difference and the Invisible Worlds of Education Abroad. The publication, which will be published in 2026, will explore the themes of difference, otherness and boundaries with a particular focus on the idea of the stranger and the unseen aspects of international education.
The call invites educators, scholars, and practitioners to examine how students engage with cultural boundaries and unfamiliar environments while studying abroad. Submissions may explore both the visible and invisible elements that shape global learning experiences, from sensory disruptions to erased histories and unspoken social codes. Understanding of place is also shaped by the invisible: histories that have been erased, marginalized voices, collective myths, ideological underpinnings, and their own subjective consciousness.
CEA CAPA Education Abroad is rooted in the idea of immersion and learning through difference. Students today often encounter an increasingly homogenized global landscape marked by English as a lingua franca, international branding, and the omnipresence of digital culture. The challenge for educators is how to foster meaningful engagement with cultural otherness while addressing this growing sameness.
Contributors are encouraged to examine how belief systems, collective memory, and imagination impact the student experience. The role of the hidden curriculum, the implicit rules, and assumptions students encounter is also central to the theme.
Possible themes include:
- Navigating difference and otherness
- Teaching erased histories and marginalized voices
- Mythi, faith and cultural imagination
- Sensory anxiety and cultural codes
- The role of digital, virtual and augmented realities
- The hidden curriculum abroad
- Psychogeography and place-based learning
Submissions should range between 1,500 and 4,000 words and may take the form of scholarly papers, case studies, commentaries or interdisciplinary essays. Early-career professionals and underrepresented voices are especially encouraged to contribute.
Print and digital copies of the current and past publications are available on our website.
Completed papers must be submitted by Monday, July 14, 2025, as a Word or .rtf document with minimal formatting.
