Classes at Anglo-American University are an interesting mix of American and European teaching techniques. Most of my professors are American and attended American universities, and their lecture styles reflect this. The main difference is the syllabus, which is more European in style.

There is less homework, so the midterm, final, projects and papers count for much more. The homework doesn’t always count for points, but if you don’t do it, you will fall behind. There is an emphasis on keeping up outside of class, with readings and homework. Though it is slightly different, it was easy to adjust.

My classmates have been mostly American students. However, there are a variety of European students who I’ve gotten to meet, and I have friends who are the only Americans in their classes. It’s been very cool to meet people from all over the world and see how their different perspectives contribute to group discussion.

| Czech textbook is a lifeline |
One class I’m taking is elementary Czech language and culture, which I recommend for any study abroad student. Not only was learning basic greetings and phrases life-saving, but we also learn all about the history of the Czech Republic. We’ve learned Czech folk songs, and even got to take a field trip to a restaurant and practice ordering in Czech. Even though you can get by with English in Prague, it’s definitely appreciated when you use Czech.
Other classes I’ve taken at AAU are Documentary, Comparative Worldviews, and Folklore and Mythology. Documentary has been great for me as a film major, since I’ve learned all about the history of film and the style and work that goes into making a documentary. Comparative Worldviews pairs perfectly with studying abroad, since being abroad has already exposed me to different walks of life. Studying the history and development of different worldviews has been eye-opening and forced me to reevaluate my own biases. Meanwhile, Folklore has been a highly enjoyable elective that has allowed me to study in depth a topic I’ve always casually enjoyed.
