My Home Life While Studying Abroad in Prague, Czech Republic
The purpose of my photoset is to show the home life of students studying abroad in Prague, something that I think students often neglect to think about when thinking about studying abroad.
The crew was ready for a weekend getaway, showing all that we needed to bring from our apartment.
I included some pictures depicting different parts of the apartment I lived in there as well as some aspects of the apartment that made it feel like home and work for my roommates and me, such as different meals from our cooking schedule.
A picture showing the bed we were provided with. It was a surprisingly good sleep that I got on a comfy mattress with a good pillow and sheets.
I’ve also included a couple photos that showed what I would call extensions of the home life as they were important to our apartment, such as our favorite restaurant that we ate at more times than I can count, as well as our main spot we would be when not in our house.
A local restaurant that was a 10-second walk away from our place led to a very tasty mocktail night!
When I was thinking about studying abroad, housing was one of the main things that I was worried about as a concern. In turn, the housing that I had was one of my favorite parts and I know that is not the case for everyone, but I can share the ways we made ours better.
The first thing that I think made our housing a success was that we were all friends with each other. It tends to be a better experience if all the roommates like each other, but that may not always be possible. With us all being friends, we were all courteous to each other and were not afraid to call each other out when we were not pulling our weight.
For a taste of home, we went to see "The Fantastic Four" on opening night. We were worried the movie may have been in Czech, but it was in English thankfully.
On one of our first nights, we were all proud of our local attire, so we got a picture to show us truly living in Prague.
My favorite thing I think we did was that we had a cooking schedule where we all cooked on different days of the week, so we had a variety of chefs and therefore cuisines with everyone’s unique style. In tandem with cooking, we all took care of our dishes as soon as we were done cooking or shortly thereafter so we did not have a pile of dishes for someone to clean up. I think a lot of the bad roommate stories I heard had to do with dishes, so if you can take care of that it will be much more pleasant.
It was my night to cook in the rotation and I was very proud of my work. It was a big hit!
On one of the “colder” summer nights, we all decided that we wanted chili. It ended up being a great meal for the squad.
We did not have any clean bowls, so we ended up sharing tiramisu gelato from the grocery store in our provided champagne glasses.
In addition to this, we had nights where we did activities as roommates such as playing Fortnite together as a squad. While those nights probably did not make the most of Prague, they were nights that we quite enjoyed and were a nice change of pace.
A night in led to a Fortnite squad up, making some of the best memories we had from our time abroad!
