All the Lessons I’ve Learned from My Travels While Studying Abroad!
One of my favorite parts of studying abroad has been traveling to new countries and cities on the weekends. While I would have considered myself a fairly experienced traveler before this experience, I have learned so much more this past semester and I’d love to share all of my tips and tricks with you!

Respecting the Culture
First and foremost, be respectful of the culture! For example, when I traveled to Tunisia I did a lot of research on the culture beforehand so that I knew I needed to cover my shoulders and my knees in public. Furthermore, always remember that you are a visitor to that place, which means that you should come from a place of curiosity rather than judgement when you see things that may be different than what you are used to.

And on a similar note, I have always found it so helpful to learn a little bit of the language before you go and maybe make a note on your phone or some helpful phrases. Knowing how to say “hello, thank you, and please” will get you further than you’d realize, and the locals really appreciate it when you at least try. I’ve also found it so helpful to ask questions or just strike up conversations with locals, when possible, they will have the best recommendations, and most people are more than willing to help if you approach them kindly.

The Power of Good Company
I’m sure you’ve heard this phrase before, but I live by the idea that everything is made better with good company! I have made the best memories of the coolest places because I either went with super fun friends or I met wonderful people along the way. Some of my favorite people I’ve met this semester have been the ones I met in new places, and you never know who you will meet, that’s the best part!

Spending my fall break with my mum in Verona, Italy
On the same note, try and say yes to new experiences as much as you can, and just be open to all the wonderful opportunities you have, even if they’re a bit out of your comfort zone. This might mean trying the local cuisine, taking on a solo trip, going out with new friends, or immersing yourself in the language. Whatever it is, I promise it will be worth it, having new experiences is the goal of travel! Oh, and don’t forget to find souvenirs to remember your travels by. My personal favorites include postcards, museum tickets, and keychains.

Slow Down and Take It All In
And finally, don’t forget to stop and take it all in every once in a while. I’ve definitely found myself so caught up in the fast pace of weekend travel many times, and it always helps to just take it slow sometimes. Whether this means taking a slow morning to enjoy the sunset, sitting for coffee and drawing the views, or journaling about your experiences, find a way to really appreciate how wonderful these experiences really are. And my final note is to always remember to take care of yourself! :)
