French Culture Through Music, Art, and Markets

France is full of music, masterpieces, and markets. Wherever you go, you’re sure to find musicians on the streets, museums splattered across town, and bustling morning markets.

I love to grab a bouquet of flowers on my way home from class at the weekly flower markets in Aix.

My personal favorite so far has been one of Paris’s many jazz clubs, Le Caveau de la Huchette. Inside this seemingly calm little building, you’ll find live jazz performances and swing dance. Even more exciting, this is the same jazz club featured in La La Land. Whether you’re a pro or a beginner, all are welcome to be swept up in the music and dance your heart out.

My friends and I took a trip to Paris, where we danced the night away at Le Caveau de la Huchette with lively jazz music.

Aside from jazz clubs, you’ll have no problem finding old records being sold in stores or at markets or even musicians playing a tune on the street. The sound of a saxophone outside the CEA CAPA office every week always puts a smile on my face. Wherever you are, Paris, Aix, or some other French city, music is sure to fill the air.

I always like to take a peek at the different records sold at markets or vintage record stores like this one to see what kind of music is sold. While there’s more American music than I expected, I’ll always find a new French artist I haven’t discovered yet.

Aside from music, you’ll be able to experience French culture through art at any one of the many museums. Sitting right outside of my apartment in Aix is Musée Granet, previously the art school where Cezanne studied art. While not many of his pieces are featured, you’ll still be able to see a beautiful selection of paintings and statues in this quaint museum.

Musée Granet sits right outside my apartment, which means my roommates and I get to take a trip to look at all the art whenever we can.

Statues are scattered across most cities in France, my favorite of which was this statue in Eze right outside the tropical gardens.

Even walking through the city you might stumble upon gorgeous fountains or statues, including one of Aix’s most known fountains at La Rotonde. You’ll find some interesting fountains in Paris as well, like the one we stumbled upon in the square where Marie Antoinette took her last breaths.

Intricate fountains are also planted throughout most cities, often telling a story of the town’s history through the type of images depicted and their origin. My friends and I found this particular fountain in Paris, which apparently marked the square where Marie Antoinette took her last breaths.

Churches throughout France are themselves a work of art, particularly Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris where my friends and I were amazed at the architecture and art within.

And of course, perhaps one of my favorite aspects of French culture is the many weekly markets. Not only can you get the most delicious oranges and fresh food, but you’ll also find weekly flower markets in Aix and even the occasional vintage flea market.

Fresh oranges from the markets have become a staple in my diet. I love being able to buy fresh food at the weekly and daily food markets.

You’ll always find some cool trinket, piece of jewelry, or clothes at the occasional flea market.

Perhaps you’re more into antiques, which you’ll also be able to find in some of these markets.
