Embracing the Pura Vida Lifestyle in Costa Rica

Before I came to Costa Rica, I did not know what to expect. I knew that my daily routine and habits would change once I went abroad.

I start my days with breakfast which is always very healthy! Then I get ready for class and walk to Veritas Universidad. I have an intensive Spanish class for four hours a day! The Spanish class I am taking now is directed towards students who are interested in a career in the medical field. I have learned how to take a complete medical history, blood pressure, and many anatomical terms from this class! It is especially helpful that through CEA I am able to participate in a volunteering program at a local hospital while I am abroad. Not only have I gained a new perspective of the medical field but I am now able to communicate effectively with the healthcare providers there.

After class, my classmates and I will typically go to a local restaurant, or soda, for lunch. These places offer a variety of options – even American cuisine! After lunch, I head back to my house where I finish homework and get ready for the next day! My mama tica always cooks dinner and teaches us about Costa Rican foods. Typically we have ‘casado’ which is a dish Native to this country. It includes rice, beans, plantains, meat, and a salad. It is called ‘casado’ which means married because rice and beans are always served together, as if they were married! I have tried so many new foods since I have arrived here!

Towards the end of the week I always get excited for the weekend! If there is not a trip planned by CEA we are able to travel on our own! I have been to some incredible places and learned so much about the Costa Rican culture. So far, my experience abroad has been amazing! I have embraced the Pura Vida lifestyle and learned to step out of my comfort zone!
