A Month in Buenos Aires: First Impressions

Buenos Aires smells like smoke and coffee.

I breathe deep: greenery of parks,

humidity from the subte.

The air tastes like mate,

a hint of bitterness on my tongue, but oh,

how it fills you. I feel it between my fingers,

sticky like dulce de leche,

soft like the water from the Rio de la Plata.

I feel the city in my heartbeat,

rhythm of Tango music,

of salsa, of rock. It doesn’t stop beating.

Buenos Aires moves, spins through twisted streets,

by the speed of its cars and colectivos,

it’s drivers so sure of themselves that,

when I travel, I hardly breathe.

It is a city of color, city with platform shoes

and patterned dresses, it is the sun’s presence,

it is meat on the grill and wine on your lips.

It is boliche by night and café by day,

it is art and dance, it is bookstore after bookstore,

it is all of this, all of this, and more.
