About the Program
As the world grows ever more globalized, the ability to communicate in meaningful and culturally appropriate ways across global divides is a necessity...and what location could provide a better backdrop in which to explore the intersections of communication, media, and culture than Shanghai? Communication's interdisciplinary nature means relevance across fields such as media, cultural studies, anthropology, psychology, and health—and globalization's rise reveals how connected we are. This program offers courses related to mass communications, new communication technologies, and special topics in communication. We offer this program in partnership with the University of Arizona.

East China Normal University
Founded in 1951, East China Normal University (ECNU) is one of the most prestigious universities in China, under the direct auspices of the Ministry of Education. The first university founded after the establishment of the People's Republic of China, ECNU has developed into a comprehensive university that incorporates 21 schools and colleges, five advanced research institutes, and 58 departments offering 130 undergraduate, master's, and doctoral programs. Approximately 30,000 students study at ECNU’s Downtown and Minhang campuses.
ECNU emphasizes internationalization and enjoys both a wide influence and an excellent reputation. Every year, over 3,500 international students from 45 countries study at ECNU, creating a diverse and friendly community. CEA students will join the Global Curriculum Program at ECNU's Global Education Center, an ideal setting in which to learn about China through academic and cultural immersion with other international students. Taught in English by international faculty team, the courses cover subject areas such as Business/Economy, Sociology, Politics, Culture, and Philosophy. The credit structure is identical to North American Universities and colleges.
ECNU’s Downtown campus is nicknamed the "Garden University" for its beautiful scenery. On campus, you’ll find old trees, gardens, rivers, bridges, and lawns, while just outside are two huge malls, four metro systems, and a mature international community.
Accreditation
East China Normal University is accredited by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China and under the guidelines of the Municipal Government of the city of Shanghai.

Completion of a course is defined as a receipt of a letter grade (A+ to F) as opposed to Withdrawal or Incomplete.
In order to determine a quality point ratio, each letter grade from a completed course is assigned a quality point value. The quality point value for each grade earned during a semester is multiplied by the number of semester hours assigned to that course. The sum of these points is the total number of quality points earned during the semester. It is divided by the number of semester hours completed to obtain the quality point ratio.
Classroom and Information
- Faculty members are from North America, Europe, and China with teaching experience in multiple countries.
- Periodic exams, homework assignments, and final exams will be administered.
- Attendance in all classes is mandatory and monitored by each professor.
- Teaching styles in China may be different from those found in the U.S. Be prepared to adapt to different classroom structures and coursework expectations.
- Class size ranges between 10 and 20 students.
- You’ll attend class with students from the U.S., Canada, Asia, and other parts of the world.

CEA Shanghai Center – University of Arizona
In 2015, the CEA Shanghai Center and the University of Arizona (UA) entered into a partnership with the goal of engaging a diverse group of students and academic disciplines in dynamic Shanghai. This unique collaboration combines UA’s distinguished academic leadership with CEA's outstanding student admissions, academic management, and support to provide students with a comprehensive and engaging experience.
Semester courses offered in East Asian Studies, Communication, Nutritional Sciences and Global Studies have been designed in conjunction with and approved by UA. Students taking courses in these disciplines will receive credit for their work from UA, a student-focused, comprehensive research university that is fully accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA).
Accreditation
Courses at the CEA Shanghai Center are transcripted by the University of New Haven, which is fully accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the New England Association for Schools and Colleges, or the University of Arizona, which is fully accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
Grading
Professors at the CEA Shanghai Center carefully evaluate student's work and progress throughout the session. When calculating grades, instructors consider written and oral exercises, homework assignments, attendance, classroom participation, and exam performance using the following grading system:

- Classes are taught by international faculty selected by CEA and approved by the University of Arizona, pending subject and term.
- Faculty represent a variety of different academic and professional backgrounds.
- Periodic exams, homework assignments, and final exams will be administered.
- Attendance in all classes is mandatory and monitored by each professor.
- Class size ranges between 15 and 25 students for electives. Small class sizes allow for personalized attention from your instructors.

Excursions
Get out and explore! Excursions are offered for most semester, year, and summer programs. Semester students are typically offered between two to three excursions and summer study students are typically offered between one to two excursions. You'll receive a calendar of excursions during orientation; here are a few day and overnight excursions we've offered in the past.
