Located on the Plaza Catalunya in the heart of the city, the CEA Barcelona Center offers courses in a range of subjects, taught in English and Spanish. Learning takes place both in and out of the classroom, with instructors taking full advantage of Barcelona’s many notable sites and attractions.
Pompeu Fabra University’s six central Barcelona campuses offer a range of courses on the trimester system. Classes are taught in English and Spanish; choose to take courses with Spaniards for a truly integrated experience.

When you study abroad in Barcelona, you can choose CEA housing or arrange your own independent housing. CEA housing assignments are based on availability and confirmation date; we make every effort to match your housing requests, but we can’t guarantee housing preferences.

Program Structure

Enroll in 1 UPF language course, 2-3 UPF elective courses, and 0-1 CEA elective courses. UPF language courses meet for 90 contact hours/6 credits; UPF and CEA elective courses meet for 45 contact hours/3 credits. You may also choose to enroll in the Global Career Development Seminar course, which meets for 15 contact hours/1 credit.

Semester students may earn a total of 12-16 credits (up to 240 contact hours) and academic year students may earn a total of 24-32 credits (up to 480 contact hours).

UPF language courses meet daily, Monday-Thursday. UPF elective courses may meet 2-3 times per week, Monday-Thursday. Typically, CEA elective classes meet twice per week, Monday-Thursday. Active learning components required by your courses may be scheduled for Fridays.

Prior to departure, you will select your preferred courses and take an online language placement exam. After you arrive in Barcelona, you'll take a language placement exam at UPF during orientation week. You will be enrolled into courses based on their availability. It is in your best interest to have multiple alternative courses approved by your home university prior to your departure due to course availabilities. To ensure that you receive credit for the language level you place into, have your home university pre-approve courses at several levels before you leave for Spain. Please consult with your academic advisor at your home university on credit pre-approval guidelines.
