CEA is proud to announce we are a finalist in four categories of the 2017 GoAbroad Innovation Awards, which recognizes excellence and innovation in the field of international education. The recognition this year is especially exciting as CEA celebrates our 20th anniversary, along with GoAbroad.
Our four finalists this year highlight just a few of the many ways CEA has contributed to the field of study abroad and made an impact on students, their families, colleges & universities in the last 20 years. Not only are we are a finalist for the People’s Choice Award for overall excellence in support and programming, as seen through the eyes of study abroad professionals, but one of our Alumni Ambassadors is a finalist for the Student Video Award this year. In addition, we are a finalist for Innovative New Program and Innovation in Marketing & Digital Media.
We’re thrilled to be in the running for the 2017 People’s Choice Award, which recognizes overall excellence in student service and in providing meaningful educational experiences abroad. We’d like to thank those of you who nominated us for this category, which is such an honor. As you may know, the winner of this award will be determined by you, our partners, so please help CEA win this award and vote here.
Another category to be decided by public vote is Student Video. CEA Senior Ambassador Ethan Beseris has been nominated in this category for “University of Utah Promo Reel,” a whirlwind tour of some of CEA’s international locations that captures the exuberance of students studying abroad and discovering where history, education and culture come together. To cast your digital ballot for Ethan, go here.
Voting for Student Video and People’s Choice Award closes May 31, 11:59 p.m. PST.
Our other 2 finalists this year are:

Winners for eight of the ten categories will be decided by the GoAbroad Innovation Awards Academy (excluding People’s Choice & Student Video) and all winners will be revealed during the GoAbroad hosted reception on June 1 at this year’s NAFSA Annual Conference in Los Angeles, May 28- June 2.
For students pursuing communication related subjects, gaining exposure to different ideas, environments, and channels of communication can translate into a more skilled and confident graduate, prepared to meet the challenges of an uncertain 21st century media landscape.
CEA’s communication programming has anticipated the needs of students and provides strong academics that address the requirements of their major. But beyond the coursework, CEA’s communication programs offer the opportunity for practical experience, language practice, and daily cross-cultural exchanges that inform a more nuanced set of communication skills. All of benefit to a student pursing a degree in a communication-related field.
Courses are available in various CEA locations, most are taught in English and all incorporate active learning that brings the classroom to the streets of the host city. Our Subject Area Guide and Program Finder can help you in advising students about CEA’s communication-related offerings that will best meet their academic needs.
In addition, CEA offers programs of varying lengths to accommodate a student’s schedule and budget. Semester, year, and summer opportunities are available and the CEA Communication Program Pricing Guide will help you when advising in order to find the perfect CEA study or intern abroad option for each individual student.
Beyond the classroom experience, CEA Internships Abroad program places students in unique communication-related internships abroad that allow them to explore their career field alongside seasoned practitioners. And as CEA typically places students in small and medium-sized local companies, the student benefits from greater professional and cultural immersion. A sampling of communication-related internship examples are available here.

As part of our 20th anniversary celebration, CEA is gathering two decades worth of interviews and insights from alumni, CEA staff and faculty, and from our U.S. partner institutions.
This month, we present two perspectives on CEA’s programming: Caroline Walsh, Senior Vice President of Program Development, who has been with CEA for 18 of our 20 years and Hanna Neitzke, a CEA London Alumna, who found what she needed with CEA.
A Mission of Accessibility
For Caroline, the key to CEA’s success lies in diverse course offerings that make the study abroad experience accessible to many.
Caroline: “I believe my underlying goal or guidepost has been accessibility. I mean this in the sense that the more diversity we have in our programs, the more study abroad is accessible to students. By adding Engineering for example, we make study abroad a possibility for a group of students that might not have been able to do this before. We’ve opened up courses in Exercise & Sport Science, Sport Management, Psychology and more – all to give options to students who might not have been able to find courses in their major and minor."
Hanna Neitzke, a student from Humboldt State University, found that CEA London and the University of Westminster were a “perfect fit” for diversifying her marketing and economics degree.
Hanna: “My home university in California was a small school with a budding business program with limited marketing resources, and since I was majoring in Marketing and minoring in Economics, I figured I should find a university where I could diversify my degree and gain international experience. CEA and the University of Westminster were the perfect fit. I was able to take classes like Media Metrics and Digital Branding that expanded to Advertising and Media Management & Measurement that I needed to give an edge to my resume and degree.”
Flexibility is Key
Responding to changes in academic and logistical needs has led CEA to embrace flexibility. Whether it’s allowing a student to create a plan for coursework that satisfies their specific needs or offering custom and faculty-led programs with just the right amount of support, CEA continues to find ways to evolve with students and universities.
Caroline: “I see study abroad continuing to expand to meet the needs of various academic disciplines. I also see more curricular alignment with our US universities. For example, several of our partners have asked us to add courses to help them solve issues with oversubscribed courses and/or the completion of minor programs. We’ve adapted our curriculum to help them solve these concerns with study abroad programming. Also, we created a custom unit within CEA because our university partners liked our programs and services, but wanted a bit more control and features specific to their school or department. We are nimble and flexible and able to respond to the needs of our students and university partners.”
Hanna: “CEA gave me the freedom to create my own pathway with diverse digital media courses that complemented the marketing pathway at HSU. I have experienced the solo traveler’s journey, and I have gone on organized school trips. CEA was the perfect mix of both. I had the freedom to plan my school schedule and weekend trips, but the pre-departure process was great for any question I needed answered. And they walked me through the dreaded visa process, too.”
A Passion for International Education
As much as things change, one thing remains constant: CEA is still passionate about sending students abroad to learn and grow, and students are still eager to expand their horizons, both academically and personally.
Caroline: “CEA is staffed by employees who are extremely hard-working and put in the time to ensure our students (and families) are put first; we are forward-looking in that we are always trying something new and looking for ways to innovate. CEA plans to be in the forefront of helping U.S. universities meet their needs and solve problems. We started out small 20 years ago, but are now considered a leader in study abroad. I’m excited to see where we’ll be in 20 years. We value “listening to understand” and we’ll rely on this core value to help us pave the future of study abroad.”
Hanna: “Study abroad as long as you can in one place, you’ll become part of your new home, make great connections and have regular spots. There is so much to learn about different cultures that you cannot read from a book; there is so much to learn about yourself that you won’t discover until you push your own limits. Get as much cultural experience as you can; branch out, make friends with locals and international students from other countries too. Most of all: experience the world.”
The various perspectives gathered as part of our 20th anniversary lets us see the impact CEA has made in the field of international education. We'll return in August with more interviews, stories, and insights from our tenured staff, U.S. partner institutions, and alumni that highlight what makes the CEA experience so powerful.
CEA was wonderful to work with…Their support and knowledge was constant through the planning and execution.
