Global Internship Conference 2018 Highlights
This year’s Global Internship Conference will focus on the theme “Driving Opportunities; Bridging Borders,” and CEA’s representatives are excited to participate as attendees and session presenters. GIC is the perfect occasion for our colleagues to learn more about CEA’s Internship programs and how we strive to provide the most rewarding internship abroad experience to our students.
Attend our session at GIC on June 13 at 1:00 p.m.
"Exploring the Value and Impact of an Integrated Reflective Learning Component in Internships Abroad"
Cynthia Engel, Jacqueline Martinez, and Tracey Weber discuss Kolb’s learning cycle theory, the data supporting the theory’s value, and the methods available to create experiential learning for international interns.
CEA Internships
In 2017, CEA unveiled the internships abroad initiative, which has since flourished and grown from two original locations to ten:
* Dublin
* Prague
* London
* Seville
* Barcelona
* Paris
* Rome
* Florence
* Buenos Aires
* Shanghai (Spring 2019)
We offer Internship programs during summer and semester sessions, and Study + Internship programs during semester sessions. All internship programs require students take the Multicultural Workplace seminar, which serves as an academic foundation for the internship experience. Our Study + Internship students complement their internship hours with 3 to 4 elective classes of their choosing, thereby getting to roll study abroad and an internship abroad into a single semester.
We've enhanced our internship program orientation by including a pre-departure email series and online interactive orientation, supplemented with an onsite orientation which builds on the pre-departure steps. The complete orientation process asks students to reflect on how they can make the most out of their internship abroad experience.
During the pre-departure stage, our students benefit from one-on-one coaching with our internship specialists, receiving feedback and guidance on their cover letters, resumes, and interviewing skills prior to making contact with their projected host organization. The skills they learn and refine during these coaching conversations will help them succeed in today’s competitive job market after graduation.
What’s New
CEA’s internship webinar series first aired in November 2017 as a three-part informative presentation on what to look for when considering an internship abroad. The webinar series, entitled “Navigating the Maze of International Internships,” explores the following:
* defining features of "high quality" internship opportunities
* resources and tools used to give students meaningful internship placements abroad
* student qualities signifying readiness for the international internship challenge
Because of enthusiastic demand, CEA now offers full-time Summer internships in Barcelona, Buenos Aires, Dublin, London, Paris, Prague, Rome, and Seville. Full-time interns complete 30-35 hours a week at their placement organization and enroll in a six-credit weekly seminar.
