A CEA School Survival Guide
Tips and Tricks on Classes
Going to school in America is strange compared to every other country yet normal to Americans, so the shift you feel in education when you study abroad is a little different. Before I get started, let me first say, the school program here is outstanding and amazing. The teachers do an incredible job at making you feel comfortable, relaxed, and still maintain a good balance with work. All the while I’m saying this, it is still a bit of an adjustment to get used to classes in another culture. Today I will show you the Holy Grail and share with you all of my tips and tricks on classes while in Barcelona.
1. Don't get up to go to the bathroom without asking
For most Americans this may seem very childish, however, professors find it extremely disrespectful when you get up in the middle of a class/lecture to use the restroom or even blow your nose without asking. Be cautious of this.
2.No Phones on the Desk.
Professors, often times, find it distracting and annoying to see a phone light up and the loss of attention from the lesson to the phone. Most professors will ask you for phones to be off and away, but leaving it on silent and in your bag is just as good!
3. Punctuality is Key
It's very important to be on time to class. Almost all professors will shut the door once the appropriate class time starts, and some even lock the door not allowing you to come in.
4. Class structure and values
Nothing is as valuable to a teacher than a student who participates and values the importance of the subject in class. They are always happy to answer any questions that might arise and will repeat and explain topics if you do not understand. The feeling of the classroom is usually a lot more relaxed due to the participation and makes everyone feel more comfortable. Although, if you are thinking about walking into your 11am with coffee and a snack… well, good luck Charlie!
5.Homework
For those of you that are like me, and coming from a smaller school, at times it can be very easy to forget to check for homework. BE MINDFUL OF THIS. All homework assignments are posted on Moodle and more times than none your professor will not tell you about it in class. So be mindful to check before your classes so you don’t fall behind.
6.Textbooks
For a lot of your classes, you will probably need a textbook. CEA offers them, and they are really inexpensive, but before doing this you might want to check around your apartment/dorm and see if anyone left theirs. Not only will it save you money, but you will have the notes they wrote down, which, can really help you during midterms/finals.
