Pompeii, Sorrento, and Capri

The Gardens of Ninfa

Ostia Antica

Tivoli

Get out and explore! Excursions are offered for most semester, year, and summer programs. Semester students are typically offered between two to three excursions and summer study students are typically offered between one to two excursions. You’ll receive a calendar of excursions during orientation; here are a few day and overnight excursions we’ve offered in the past.

Pompeii, Sorrento, and Capri

This two-day excursion begins with an exploration of the archaeological remains of the ancient town of Pompeii. Preserved by the ash and lava spewed out by Mt. Vesuvius in 79 A.D., Pompeii offers a snapshot of ancient Roman life. From the frescoes of the House of Vettii (an example of wealthy merchants’ homes) and the central Forum square, to the Baths and the Sacrarium of the Lares, you’ll marvel at Pompeii’s former glamour, now merely dust.

Next we’ll visit the small town of Sorrento, with its narrow alleys and beaches. Known as the pearl of the Gulf of Naples, this scenic village offers views of the islands of Capri, Ischia, and Procida.

Capri has many nicknames: the Enchanted Island, the Blue Island, the Sleeping Beauty, and the Island of Love. Spend the day exploring the island’s many beautiful sites. Known as a popular holiday destination for the rich and famous, the Isle of Capri caters to visitors with its blend of simplicity, natural beauty, and busy glitz.

The allure of the island views, rocky seashores, and scenic charm will enliven you to investigate their surroundings. Our time on Capri begins with a motorboat trip to the Blue Grotto, a magical place with crystal blue water. The rest of the day, you’ll explore the island’s two towns, Capri and Anacapri, each speckled with designer boutiques, small shops, and hidden wonders.

Florence

Florence, the cradle of the Italian Renaissance, has long attracted tourists with its red-tiled roofs, impressive Cathedral, ornate palaces, and must-see artworks. Today, the city is a thriving center that combines both ancient and modern achievements. Visits to sites such as the Academia (home of Michelangelo’s David), the Duomo, Piazza della Signoria, and Ponte Vecchio will provide you with a taste of this romantic city.

Venice

(Semester Only)

Built on the water and unique in the world, Venice has a long and intriguing history. Once an economic super-power in the Mediterranean, Venice was long a jumping-off point for traders and explorers departing for the East. From Byzantine domes, mosaics, and paintings to charming piazzas and

light-filled interiors, Venice retains the character that has made it one of the most visited destinations in the world. This three-day excursion includes a visit to Basilica of St. Mark, the Rialto Bridge and market, and the island of Murano with its glass-blowing factories. Don’t miss the unique experience of riding a gondola through the Venice canals!

Assisi

(Semester Only)

Assisi was the birthplace of St. Francis, who founded the Franciscan order in 1208. UNESCO designated the Basilica of San Francesco d'Assisi a World Heritage Site in 2000. The lower church has frescoes by the medieval artists Cimabue, Simone Martini, and Pietro Lorenzetti, while the upper church houses Giotto’s famous scenes of the life of St. Francis.

The Gardens of Ninfa

(Semester Only)

The Gardens of Ninfa take their name from nymphaeum, or place of the nymphs, and are considered to be among the most beautiful in the world. Built atop upon the ruins of an ancient settlement, the gardens are a unique example of an integrated eco-system that combines natural, cultural, and historical elements. The secret of Ninfa’s lush beauty lies in its exceptional microclimate, which allows the growth of local and exotic vegetation species. We’ll visit the gardens when they are in full bloom and finish the day with a tour of a local wine estate, where we’ll uncover the secrets of enology and gastronomy.

Ostia Antica

Ostia Antica, founded by the Romans in the 4th century BC, functioned as Rome’s main port for over 600 years. Romans, foreigners, sailors, and slaves populated the port, making this town an important focal point of defense and trade. This mélange of cultures created an interesting contrast to the rich and upper-class residents of Pompeii. During our visit to Ostia Antica you’ll visit the historical inhabitants’ homes, shops, restaurants and bakery and witness the diversity evident in the shrines, temples, and sanctuaries scattered throughout the area.

Tivoli

Ancient Tibur, just 30 minutes outside of Rome, boasts clean, crisp air in the scenic countryside. Roman aristocrats once frolicked to Tivoli, cementing its reputation as a holiday resort. We’ll visit the famous Villa Adriana, constructed by the Emperor Hadrian who spent his entire life shaping it into one of the largest, most extravagant villas in the Roman Empire. We’ll also tour Villa D’Este; once a Benedictine convent, Cardinal Ippolito d’Este refurbished it into a luxurious villa with splendid gardens and over 40 elaborate fountains, including water-works that activate the musical pipes of an organ.

Take advantage of the unique and stimulating extracurricular opportunities that CEA CAPA offers within the city of Rome. Choose from a variety of local cultural activities to match your interests. Whether you enjoy music concerts, architecture, sports, cooking classes, language exchanges or something entirely different, our Rome staff can help you get involved in the local culture.

St. Peter's Dome

Join us on a 330-step climb to the top of the Dome of St. Peter’s Basilica. Enjoy unsurpassed views of Rome from the highest structure in the historic center. Wear comfy shoes!

Ballet or Opera Night

Spend a night at the theatre, immersed in the unique atmosphere of such classics as Tchaikovsky’s ballet Swan Lake or Nabucco by Italian composer G. Verdi.

Italian Cooking Class

Food and wine culture is very important in Italy—learn how to prepare a typical Italian meal, so you can show off your culinary skills to friends and family! In this fun class, you’ll prepare (and then enjoy) Italian dishes under the instruction of a professional chef. Sessions are limited to 15 students.

Clay Workshop

Clay workshops offer a great way to take a break from your studies and put your skills to the test! An artist reveals the secrets and beauty of ceramics, helping you to produce your very own work of art. Sessions are limited to 15 students.

Pizza and Gelato Crawl

"When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie… that's amore!" Italy is famous for its pizza and gelato; we’ll sample different types while walking through Rome’s historical center. This fun tour will provide insight into both pizza-making and the great variety of Italian gelato flavors that will endlessly tease your taste buds!

Bike Ride down the Appian Way

Join us on a three-hour bike ride down the Appian Way, one of the seven ancient roads that lead to Rome. Completed in 312 BC, the Via Appia is lined with ancient Roman tombs, monuments, and ancient aqueducts. This outing delivers Roman history, culture, physical activity, and nature, all in a few memorable hours.

Language Exchange

Hone your Italian skills through conversations with local Italian students. Language exchanges are offered at the CEA CAPA Rome Center and through LUISS two to three times during the semester, depending on the availability of Italian students.

CEA CAPA/Providence College Center for Theology and Religious Studies
CEA CAPA/Providence College Center for Theology and Religious Studies

The CEA CAPA/Providence College Center for Theology and Religious Studies was established in 2010 at the CEA Rome Center. This exclusive collaboration combines CEA CAPA's outstanding academic management and support with Providence College's distinguished academic leadership and religious tradition; Providence College students can learn more about their unique program, PC in Rome. The Center provides the opportunity to study theology and religion in the heart of Rome, a cultural and religious crossroads and center of the Roman Catholic Church.

With this great city as your classroom, you’ll enjoy a unique opportunity to further your academic pursuits and improve your language skills while immersed in a historic, cosmopolitan setting. Courses offered in Italian and English are held at the CEA CAPA Rome Center and at significant sites in and around the Eternal City, including the Vatican Museums, St. Peter's Basilica, and the Catacombs of San Callisto. Local experts and scholars, and visiting Providence College faculty teach courses.

Upon successful completion of your program, you’ll receive two transcripts: one from Providence College (theology/religious studies courses), and one from the University of New Haven (language and other area studies courses).

Theology/religious studies courses available to CEA CAPA/PC students are approved and transcripted by Providence College—a four-year, co-educational, Roman Catholic college of liberal arts and sciences located in Providence, Rhode Island—and accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE). Credits earned in theology/religious studies courses are easily transferable to U.S.-accredited institutions. Learn more about Providence College.

Language and area studies courses taught at the CEA CAPA Rome Center are designed in conjunction with and approved by the University of New Haven (UNH). In addition, UNH approves faculty appointments for language and non-theology course electives. Located in Connecticut, UNH is fully accredited by NECHE.

Accreditation

Providence College is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE).

Completion of a course is defined as a receipt of a letter grade (A+ to F) as opposed to Withdrawal or Incomplete.

In order to determine a quality point ratio, each letter grade from a completed course is assigned a quality point value. The quality point value for each grade earned during a semester is multiplied by the number of semester hours assigned to that course. The sum of these points is the total number of quality points earned during the semester. It is divided by the number of semester hours completed to obtain the quality point ratio (QPR).

John Cabot University
John Cabot University

Founded in 1972 as a four-year, liberal arts and sciences university, John Cabot University (JCU) is a leading university in Rome. Named for John Cabot, a Venetian who sailed the world under the British flag, JCU exemplifies its namesake’s qualities of exploration and internationalization.

JCU is located on two campuses in Rome’s Trastevere quarter on the river Tiber, near St. Peter's and the Vatican, and a 30-minute bus ride from the CEA Rome Center. Your classes will take place throughout the city, as well as inside the classroom in subjects including art history, business administration, classics, communications, English literature, film studies, history, Italian literature, music, natural sciences, psychology, philosophy and religion. JCU is committed to providing you with an active learning environment.

You’ll attend classes with other CEA, Italian, and international students, giving you the opportunity to encounter many of the world's cultures on one of Europe's most exciting capitals. JCU runs on the American academic calendar and is accredited by the Commission on Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

Accreditation

John Cabot University (JCU) is accredited by Middle States Association Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) and is authorized by the Italian Ministry of Education to operate as a degree-granting American university in Italy. JCU also holds accreditation by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).

Grading

JCU uses the grading system used by most U.S. liberal arts schools, the 4.00 scale; 4.00 is the highest possible score and 0.00 is the lowest. Instructors ascribe letter grades (A,B,C, D, or F, sometimes followed by a + or -), and the University translates these letters into numerical values on the 4.00 scale. See the following table for a grading reference:

Verbal Grade Letter Grade GPA Equivalent
Excellent A 4.00
Excellent A- 3.67
Excellent B+ 3.33
Good B 3.00
Good B- 2.67
Good C+ 2.33
Satisfactory C 2.00
Satisfactory C- 1.67
Satisfactory D+ 1.33
Poor but Passing D 1.00
Poor but Passing D- 0.67
Failing F 0.00
Incomplete INC 0.00
Passing (C or above) P N/A
Not Passing NP N/A
Official withdrawal W 0.00

The University uses the numerical values to compute semester and cumulative grade point averages. The semester GPA is the arithmetic mean of all classes taken in that particular semester (average grade for the semester). The cumulative GPA is the arithmetic mean of all classes taken at JCU (average grade over time). A letter grade for each course, semester GPA, and cumulative GPA will appear on your transcript.

Libera Universita Internazionale Degli Studi Sociali

LUISS University (LUISS) was founded in the mid-1970s to provide an innovative, flexible education that allows students to feel a sense of mastery over their futures. Today, LUISS is known for its highly selective admissions, alignment with market demands and the business world, and the study of information technology and foreign languages.

LUISS is officially accredited by the Italian Ministry of Higher Education (last revision of accreditation decree: Art. 1, Law 243/1991) and offers degrees at all academic levels in business studies, economics, politics, and law. For the past 15 years, LUISS consistently ranks among the top three Social Sciences institutions in Italy. The school attracts top talent in both students and instructors, and is firmly committed to the highest international standards in teaching and research.

Thanks to its affiliation with Confindustria, the Italian Industrialists' Confederation, LUISS has close ties to Italian industrial concerns, most of which operate internationally. For decades, the institution has played a key role in Italy's economic and cultural development, training world leaders sensitive to the values of market culture and the rules of a modern democracy. Alumni have also made important academic contributions in economics, finance, law, and political science.

Located on six campuses across the exclusive Parioli neighborhood, LUISS is a 20-minute bus ride from the CEA Rome Center. The main campus offers a modern study environment with the latest in technology for more than 8,000 students. Architecture features open, dynamic, transparent spaces that fully express the sense of community and the intensity of life at LUISS.

You’ll attend class with other American, Italian, and international students, giving you the opportunity to engage with diverse cultures in a formative experience of intellectual exchange. International conferences, symposia, workshops, and guest-lectures further enrich your academic experience.

Accreditation

LUISS University is accredited by the Italian Ministry of Higher Education. Its business school is also accredited by EQUIS (European Quality Improvement System).

Grading

LUISS is one of the first European universities to adopt the European Community Course Credit Transfer System (ECTS). ECTS was created to promote academic recognition of studies undertaken abroad by aligning European institutions and broadening students’ educational options. By creating common standards for credits and grades, ECTS facilitates the acceptance of students' academic results.

ECTS transcripts present academic results in a clear, complete, and comprehensive manner in order to ease the credit transfer process. ECTS is increasingly accepted by U.S. institutions; however, you must consult with your home institution to ensure final acceptance of credits.
