Known for research in biotechnology, electric engineering, chemistry, and physics, Dublin City University is set on a modern, 85-acre campus just north of the city center. The campus offers the social and cultural benefits of city life, and the security and vibrancy of a modern campus, which makes DCU a vibrant, attractive place to study.

When you study abroad in Dublin, you can choose standard CEA CAPA housing—in a student residence apartment or homestay—or arrange your own independent housing. Assignments are based on availability and confirmation date; we make every effort to match your housing requests, but we can’t guarantee housing preferences.

Program Structure

Each semester, you'll enroll in courses that total up to 30 DCU credits/18 U.S. credits. Typically, you'll enroll in 4-6 courses per semester. Contact hours and meeting times vary; courses may be structured as seminars, lectures, or tutorials. You may earn a total of 18 credits per semester and 36 credits per academic year.

The academic structure lists a small sample of the subject areas available. You will have access to introductory, intermediate and advanced courses in a variety of subject areas. See below for information how to access the Dublin City University website to access a full list of courses.

You'll "pre-register" by submitting course selections and alternates to CEA before you leave for Dublin. Formal registration takes place at a registration session during the first week of the program. When making selections, indicate only the disciplines in which you wish to take courses, although you should indicate any courses you are required to take while studying abroad and any major requirements you wish to fulfill.

It is in your best interest to have multiple alternative courses approved by your home university prior to your departure due to course availabilities. Please consult with your academic advisor at your home university on credit pre-approval guidelines.

Navigating the Dublin City University Website for Courses

CEA CAPA knows it's important to make sure the credit you earn abroad will transfer back to your school at home. Fortunately, it's easy to find what you need in Dublin, because Dublin City University (DCU) offers such a wide variety of courses. In order to choose your courses for your upcoming program at DCU you will need to follow the steps below:

Choosing Your Courses

Step One:

Click here to view DCU courses and access syllabi.

Step Two:
Choose modules you are interested in taking - you may choose 12-18 US credits (up to 30 ECTS credits) worth of modules in one semester. Please indicate additional modules and list in order of preference, as places may not be available in each of the modules. It is best to have 10 modules in mind initially. DCU credits are allocated according to the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). Under this system, 3 US credits typically equals 5 or 6 ECTS. Please note that for the fall semester (semester 1), you are only eligible for modules that indicate "100% CA (continuous assessment)".

Indicate your choices on the Study Abroad Program Application Form from your Student Portal.  Please do not use the application form found on the website for DCU courses.  Please note that courses listed on the application are an indication of your course preferences ONLY.  Final registration will take place once you arrive in Dublin.

Fall classes have final exams in mid-January.  As such, students studying in the fall semester must select all 100% CA (continuous assessment) which means no end of term exam as you will be assessed on an ongoing basis. Spring students may select any module as exams take place in May.

Please verify with your university the amount of credits you will receive for the courses you are taking so that you maintain a full-time status abroad.

Helpful Hints when choosing your modules:

Demand for some modules is extremely high. Please bear in mind that it is not always possible to guarantee admission to particular modules, although we will do our best to offer you places in the modules you prefer.

  • As there is a wide range of modules open to visiting students at DCU, it is important to ensure that careful consideration is given when selecting modules. For instance, a student without a background in a particular subject should not, in general, choose a specialized third year course in the subject. There will also be occasional but inevitable incompatibilities because of timetable conflicts or some other logistical problems. Students should consult with their academic advisors at their home universities before specifying their module choices.
  • CEA CAPA encourages you to print the course descriptions and review them with your academic advisor at your home campus. It is important to get a variety of courses approved in writing by your home university prior to your departure.

Excursions

Get out and explore! Excursions are offered for most semester, year, and summer programs*. Semester students are typically offered between two to three excursions and summer study students are typically offered between one to two excursions. You'll receive a calendar of excursions during orientation; here are a few day and overnight excursions we've offered in the past.

Galway, Connemara, and the Aran Islands

Galway, Connemara, and the Aran Islands

Relax as a private bus takes you and your fellow students across Ireland, from east to west, to the Cliffs of Moher, a spectacular vista of coastline and dramatic rock face. You’ll continue to Galway, the country’s fourth largest city and considered by many to be the cultural capital of Ireland. Enjoy the spectacular sunset over Galway Bay as you discover Galway’s charmingly narrow pedestrian streets. The next day, you’ll depart for Connemara, home to beautiful and rugged landscapes where the Gaelic language is still spoken. We’ll take a ferry to the Aran Islands, where you’ll experience a link with a time long passed. Explore Dun Aengus, a fort that dates back to the Iron Age, before returning to Galway to experience live traditional music in local pubs.

Kerry

Kerry

Kerry is known as “The Kingdom” for good reason. Home to some of the most magnificent scenery in Ireland, from the gorgeous Killarney National Park to the jaw-dropping beauty of the Dingle Peninsula, we’ll venture off the typical bus tour routes so you can experience these places in a unique fashion, such as an early morning horse ride through the park and a (gentle) bike ride to Muckross House and Abbey. You’ll learn about the park’s flora and fauna, as well as the lives of the Kerry Chieftains that once resided there. No introduction to Kerry would be complete without a visit to Fungi the Dolphin; local fishermen will take you out to sea to meet Dingle’s biggest celebrity and learn about his Atlantic home. Enjoy a tasty lunch under the canopy of trees at Torc Waterfall and mingle with locals while experiencing the nightlife of Killarney town. The trip to Kerry offers a delicious combination of action, history and nature that is sure to leave you spellbound.

Glendalough and Powerscourt Gardens

Glendalough and Powerscourt Gardens

During this day trip, a private bus takes you to County Wicklow and Glendalough, the site of an old Irish monastery founded by St Kevin. Explore this scenic setting in the Wicklow Mountains in a valley between two lakes (“Gleann da loch”) and take a tour of the site. This classic example of an Irish monastery dates back to a golden era when Ireland was referred to as the “island of saints and scholars.” On the way back to Dublin via the coast road, we’ll stop at Bray, one of Ireland’s favorite seaside resorts.

Belfast

Belfast

Travel north by private coach to Belfast, the capital of Northern Ireland. Once battered by the “Troubles” between Catholics and Protestants, since 1998’s Good Friday Agreement, Belfast enjoys the hustle and bustle of any major city with its shops, bars, and restaurants full of life and activity. As a reminder of the past, we’ll visit “Loyalist” and “Republican” quarters of the city to view colorful murals that depict the bitterness of a divided community.
