Avignon and the Pont du Gard

Les Baux de Provence

Arles

The Luberon

Excursions are offered for all semester, year, and summer programs. Students taking courses at Aix Marseille University participate in CEA-organized excursions and receive a calendar of specific excursions offered for their program during orientation. Students taking courses at IAU participate in IAU excursions; IAU will inform students of the excursions offered for their program during orientation and/or the first week of class. Please note that IAU excursions may vary by program and are tied to courses. Here are some of the day trips and weekend tours offered in the past:

Avignon and the Pont du Gard
Visit the Papal Palace in Avignon, one of Europe's largest, most important medieval Gothic buildings. Once a fortress and palace, the papal residence was the seat of Western Christianity during the 14th century. Next, explore the Pont du Gard, an ancient Roman aqueduct bridge built in the 1st century. The Pont du Gard is the highest of all Roman aqueduct bridges and among the best-preserved.

Les Baux de Provence
First stop: Baux de Provence, a medieval fortified town with breath-taking views, to tour a hilltop chateau and learn about medieval Provence. Next, experience a mind-blowing audiovisual art show projected on limestone quarry walls at Les Carriéres. Enjoy a group lunch at Mas de la Pyramide, a quarry dating from Roman times that's now an agricultural museum featuring three centuries of farm life and trades.

Arles
A key headquarters for Roman military campaigns and center of the Christianization of Gaul, Arles offers windows to a colorful past. The Roman Empire's influence can still be seen in Arles; architecture, baths, aqueduct, mills, amphitheater, and more. Walking between the remnants of pillars and arches, it's easy to forget you're visiting an ancient part of Provence, especially when the ferias and other bull festivals charge the air with excitement.

The Luberon
The Luberon is a lush, green national park where mountain ranges surround a sweeping valley dotted with castles and unbelievable fairy-tale villages thought to be among the most beautiful in France. Stroll along the Sorgue River, which flows from an unknown source deep under Fountaine-de-Vaucluse; hike the red/orange/yellow ochre hills of Roussillon; and explore Gordes, a local commune. Can you discover the café where Russell Crowe filmed his scenes with Marion Cotillard for the movie A Good Year?

Camargue
Oddly enough, many modern Camargue traditions were actually modeled upon Texas and rodeos (the French love Westerns). However, this wild land looks more like Argentina, with the Camargue bull reigning as king. Brave a horseback ride on one of the wild white Camargue horses, following a guardian (cowboy) through the marshlands to get up-close glimpses of pink flamingos. Don't leave Camargue without witnessing the local version of a bullfight, where it's all sport and no violence.

Visit Cezanne’s Workshop
Tour Paul Cezanne's Aix workshop with a local art historian/art professor and create your own rendering of Ste. Victoire mountain (immortalized by Cezanne 86 times!) in one of the spots where Cezanne used to paint. You’ll take home an amazing souvenir of Aix’s iconic mountain.

Dîner chez Christine
Dîner chez Christine is one of CEA Aix’s favorite cultural activities! Christine is a delightful lady who works at the local Post Office and loves cooking for international students. No dinner with Christine would be complete without a lively discussion of French culture, politics, and daily life en francais bien sur!

The Art of Wine Tasting
Discover the wonderful world of French wine. Explore color, aroma, and palate with a local wine expert as you taste and analyze a selection of French wines.

Cheese Tasting
In 1962, Charles de Gaulle proclaimed, “How can anyone govern a nation that has two hundred and forty-six different kinds of cheese?” Today, that number has grown — there are more cheeses than there are days in a year! (That’s a lot of cheese.) Learn all about French cheeses and sample a selection.

Café Hour
Once a week, CEA hosts Café Hour in a local café, where you’ll get a chance to catch up with your fellow students. Enjoy the opportunity to taste frog legs, snails, and other local specialties. Locals are also invited, creating the perfect opportunity to practice your French skills over calissons and biscotins.

Lavender Fields
If you come to Aix in June and July, you won’t want to miss a visit to the lavender fields, where you’ll take in an endless sea of bluish purple waving in the wind. Learn about the distillation process and the many homeopathic uses for these feathery, fragrant flowers, including headaches, bug bites, and help falling asleep.

Cooking Class
Spend a lunch hour taking a class in an Aix cooking school. In this hands-on Aixperience, you’ll prepare food with a local chef, then enjoy the results of your labor as everyone eats together around a big table.

Le Camp des Milles
Take a guided tour of Le Camp des Milles, France’s only internment, transit, and deportation camp. Here, you’ll learn about the darker side of Provence through a compelling collection of displays, audiovisual pieces, and illustrations. The museum recounts the complex history of the Camp des Milles and of the men, women, and children who experienced it during WWII (1939-1942).

Language Exchange
They'll help you with your French, you help them with their English! Join a language exchange with local Aix Marseille University and IAU students. These opportunities are available during Fall and Spring semesters:
- Conversation workshops at Aix Marseille University

Aix Marseille University
Aix Marseille University

Aix Marseille University, one of the oldest universities in France, boasts many prominent government leaders among its alumni. The university is centrally located near the famous Cours Mirabeau.

You’ll take courses through the Service Universitaire des Langues (SUL), the university’s French language school. Founded in 1953, SUL (previously known as Service Universitaire de Français Langue Etrangère, SUFLE)  is regarded as one of the best French-language teaching centers in the country and hosts about 1,000 students from 65 countries.

SUL offers instruction in French at all levels—from beginning to advanced—and prepares students for the diplomas of the Paris Chamber of Commerce and other diplomas and certificates. At SUL, you won’t just learn French language: you’ll also gain an understanding of and appreciation for France's literature, history, and culture.

Accreditation

Aix Marseille University is recognized by the French Ministry of National Education as a degree-granting institution.

Grading

The French grading system is based on a scale of 20, as opposed to 100 in the U.S. system. It would be inaccurate to merely multiply a French grade by a factor of five to find its U.S. equivalent. Grades in France are awarded on a scale of 1-20, but the tradition is such that grades higher than 16 are seldom awarded. The passing grade for a single subject is usually 10/20, although grades of 8 and 9 may indicate satisfactory performance. Grading in France is severe and can vary from one institution to another, and from one course to another.

The Franco-American Commission for Educational Exchange recommends the following comparison of grades:

French Number Grade

U.S. Letter Equivalent

14-20

A

12-13.9

C+

IAU College
IAU College

Founded in 1957 under the auspices of l'Université d'Aix-Marseille and chartered by the Regents of the University of the State of New York, IAU College is one of Europe’s oldest and largest education abroad programs.

IAU College welcomes undergraduates from U.S. colleges and universities. Courses in the humanities, social sciences, and fine arts are taught in French and English. In the context of Provence's rich Mediterranean heritage, IAU delivers curriculum that guides students to cultural competency while fostering a life-long affinity for the culture, language, and people of France.

Since its inception, IAU has worked with more than 20,000 students and 700 U.S. public and private colleges and universities, many of which are familiar with the high standards of Institute programs and which accept Institute recommendations for the direct transfer of academic credit to the home institution. A number of American universities and colleges have signed direct affiliation agreements and provide for direct transfer of academic credit. While IAU does issue its own transcripts, it understands that some institutional policies require students to obtain their study abroad credit from regionally accredited U.S. institutions. For these cases, IAU has an agreement with a U.S. school of record.

Accreditation

IAU is charted as an institution of higher education by the Regents of the State University of New York, and is recognized as an institution of higher learning by the French Ministry of Higher Education and Research, the French Ministry of the Interior, and the Rectorat of Aix-Marseille University.  IAU issues its own transcripts as a not-for-profit institution of higher education.

Grading

IAU instructors carefully evaluate your work and progress throughout the term. When calculating final grades, instructors consider written and oral exercises, homework assignments, attendance, classroom participation and performance on exams, in addition to other curriculum-appropriate criteria.

The following grading system is in use at IAU; some French professors may grade according to the French system, however all grades will be converted to letter grades on the transcript.
