As the world grows ever more globalized, the ability to communicate in meaningful and culturally appropriate ways across global divides is a necessity...and what location could provide a better backdrop in which to explore the intersections of communication, media, and culture than Shanghai? Communication's interdisciplinary nature means relevance across fields such as media, cultural studies, anthropology, psychology, and health—and globalization's rise reveals how connected we are. This program offers courses related to mass communications, new communication technologies, and special topics in communication. We offer this program in partnership with the University of Arizona.
Founded in the mid-1900s, East China Normal University is one of China’s most prestigious educational institutions. Known for a focus on internationalization, ECNU’s 30,000-strong student body hosts more than 3,500 students from around the world, creating a diverse, friendly setting for study abroad students.
The CEA Shanghai Center- University of Arizona offers language instruction at all levels and courses in a range of subjects. The center is co-located on the campus of East China Normal University, one of China’s most prestigious educational institutions known for its international focus.
When you study abroad in Shanghai, you can choose CEA housing or arrange your own independent housing. CEA housing assignments are based on availability and confirmation date; we make every effort to match your housing requests, but we can’t guarantee housing preferences.
Program Structure
You'll enroll in 1 Chinese language course at an appropriate level, 1-3 core courses, and 1-3 elective courses at the CEA Shanghai Center. You'll also have the option to enroll in 0-3 elective courses at our partner, East China Normal University (ECNU). CEA language courses meet for 75 contact hours/5 credits; core courses and electives meet for 45 contact hours/3 credits.
You may earn 14-17 credits (up to 255 contact hours). Classes typically meet Monday-Thursday. Active learning components required by your courses may be scheduled on Fridays.
Prior to departure, you will select your preferred courses and take a language placement exam. You will be enrolled into courses based on their availability. It is in your best interest to have multiple alternative courses approved by your home university prior to your departure due to course availabilities. To ensure that you receive credit for the language level you place into, have your home school pre-approve courses at several levels before you leave for China. Please consult with your academic advisor at your home university on credit pre-approval guidelines.
The following courses have been confirmed for this term. Please note, the host institution reserves the right to cancel or change courses without prior notification.
