Shanghai Normal University’s tree-lined campus is located in a quiet neighborhood where CEA students take language courses at SNU’s International College of Chinese Studies (ICCS). With a strong reputation for excellence in language teaching, ICCS draws about 2,000 students from Asia, the U.S., and Europe every year for Chinese language instruction at all levels.

When you study abroad in Shanghai, you can choose CEA housing or arrange your own independent housing. CEA housing assignments are based on availability and confirmation date; we make every effort to match your housing requests, but we can’t guarantee housing preferences.

Program Structure

You'll enroll in a Chinese language course at your ability level. You may earn 22 credits (up to 340 contact hours) over the semester.

Classes meet Monday-Friday at various times. Active learning components required by your courses may be scheduled on Fridays.

Registration takes place on-site in Shanghai; you'll take written and oral language placement tests to determine your appropriate language level.

It is in your best interest to have multiple alternative courses approved by your home university prior to your departure due to course availabilities. To ensure that you receive credit for the language level you place into, have your home school pre-approve courses at several levels before you leave for China. Please consult with your academic advisor at your home university on credit pre-approval guidelines.
