About the Program

Spend your summer improving your Chinese language skills in a short period of time. Designed for beginning and intermediate speakers, this program offers courses that provide insight and context into China's unique business environment, and help you understand the challenges businesses face as they strive to compete in 21st century global markets. You'll have the opportunity to practice your language skills with locals and native speakers, and to deepen your understanding of Chinese culture through weekly cultural activities that bring lessons learned in the classroom to life, such as calligraphy and painting workshops, conversations with Chinese students, and guided class excursions around the city.

Program Structure

Choose to take 1 language course, or 1 language and 1 elective course. Language courses meet for 60 contact hours/4 credits, and electives meet for 45 contact hours/3 credits.

If you choose the 1-course option, you may earn 3-4 credits (up to 60 contact hours); if you choose the 2-course option, you may earn 7 credits (up to 105 contact hours.)

Classes meet 3-4 times per week, Monday-Thursday. Active learning components required by your courses may be scheduled on Fridays.

Prior to departure, you will select your preferred courses and take a language level placement exam. You will be enrolled into courses based on their availability. It is in your best interest to have multiple alternative courses approved by your home university prior to your departure due to course availabilities. To ensure that you receive credit for the language level you place into, have your home school pre-approve courses at several levels before you leave for China. Please consult with your academic advisor at your home university on credit pre-approval guidelines.
