About the Program

Program Description

Deepen your understanding of local French and global cultures, politics, art and current events while earning credits in your field of study. Electives are taught in English and focus on an active learning approach, as your instructors take you outside the classroom and into the city, using the streets, markets, museums, and people of Paris to enhance your learning and discovery. Semester and academic year students can also hone their French language skills in courses available at all levels of proficiency. An Early Start option allows you to jump start your language learning before the semester begins.

Program Structure

Each semester, you'll enroll in 1 core course and 3-4 elective courses. Courses meet for 45 contact hours/3 credits. You may earn 12-15 credits (up to 225 contact hours) per semester; if you choose the Early Start option, you may earn 15-18 credits (up to 270 contact hours). Academic year students may earn 24-30 credits (up to 450 contact hours); if you choose the Early Start option, you may earn 27-33 credits (up to 495 contact hours).

Typically, courses meet 1-3 times per week, Monday-Thursday. Early Start courses meet daily, Monday-Thursday. Active learning components required by your courses may be scheduled on Fridays.

Prior to departure, you will select your preferred courses and take an online language placement exam. After arriving in Paris, you'll also take an oral language placement exam. You will be enrolled into courses based on their availability and the result of your placement exam. It is in your best interest to have multiple alternative courses approved by your home university prior to your departure due to course availabilities. To ensure that you receive credit for the language level you place into, have your home school pre-approve courses at several levels before you leave for France. Please consult with your academic advisor at your home university on credit pre-approval guidelines.

Where You'll Study

The Catholic University of Paris, a private university founded in 1875, is located in the 6th arrondissement within walking distance of the Latin Quarter, Saint-Germain-des-Prés, and Montparnasse. CEA students enroll in courses with other international students at the Institut de Langue et de Culture Françaises (ILCF), the Institut Catholique’s center for French Language and Culture.
Located in the heart of the vibrant Marais District, the CEA Paris Center offers small class sizes and a wide range of electives taught in English. Choose the courses that best align with your academic, career, and personal interests. Through a grant program geared to local students, you'll have the opportunity to sit alongside French students in a few of your classes.

Where You'll Stay

When you study abroad in Paris, you can choose CEA housing or arrange your own independent housing. CEA housing assignments are based on availability and confirmation date; we make every effort to match your housing requests, but we can’t guarantee housing preferences.

Picture Yourself Here.

If you could go anywhere, where would you choose?

Can't decide? Don't worry. We still love you. Check as many as you like. Still not sure? That's OK. We would totally have a hard time too. Just check 'I don't know yet'.
