About the Program

Program Description

In 2000, as engineering education embarked upon a new century, the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) released new mandates for engineering programs. In particular, engineering graduates need to understand the impact of engineering solutions from a global and societal perspective. In this context, CEA has designed this program for students in their second year of the Chemical Engineering (CHE) major who are interested in exploring their field abroad through site visits and lectures on special topics that complement their core engineering courses. An Early Start option allows you to jump start your French language learning before the semester begins.

Program Structure

You'll enroll in 3 CHE courses—Chemical Thermodynamics, Chemical Fluid Mechanics, and Differential Equations—and one culturally-focused elective course, which usually transfers back as an Art, Humanities, and/or Social Science elective in standard, second-year CHE degree programs. All courses are taught in English. You're also encouraged to take a 3-credit French Language course or an additional CEA elective course.

All CHE courses meet for 60 hours/4 credits. CEA language and elective courses meet for 45 hours/3 credits. You may earn 15-18 credits (up to 270 contact hours); if you choose the Early Start option, you may earn 18-21 credits (up to 315 contact hours).

Typically, courses meet 1-3 times per week, Monday-Thursday. Early Start courses meet daily, Monday-Thursday. Active learning components required by your courses may be scheduled on Fridays.

Prior to departure, you will select your preferred courses. If you choose to enroll in French Language as one of your electives, you will take an online language placement exam. After arriving in Paris, you’ll also take an oral language placement exam. You will be enrolled into courses based on their availability and the result of your placement exam. It is in your best interest to have multiple alternative courses approved by your home university prior to your departure due to course availabilities. Please consult with your academic advisor at your home university on credit pre-approval guidelines.

Where You'll Study

Located in the heart of the vibrant Marais District, the CEA Paris Center offers small class sizes and a wide range of electives taught in English. Choose the courses that best align with your academic, career, and personal interests. Through a grant program geared to local students, you'll have the opportunity to sit alongside French students in a few of your classes.

Where You'll Stay

When you study abroad in Paris, you can choose CEA housing or arrange your own independent housing. CEA housing assignments are based on availability and confirmation date; we make every effort to match your housing requests, but we can’t guarantee housing preferences.

Picture Yourself Here.

If you could go anywhere, where would you choose?

Can't decide? Don't worry. We still love you. Check as many as you like. Still not sure? That's OK. We would totally have a hard time too. Just check 'I don't know yet'.
