DESCRIPTION

Using live models, on-site visits to draw from sculptures, and street life in Florence, students will study the anatomical and structural dynamics of the human figure. This course will emphasize the role of the human figure in both traditional and contemporary art. Materials used include pencil, charcoal, Conté and ink wash drawing.

Working directly from the model, the course will introduce students to a variety of wet and dry media that will help them develop their drawing and observational skills. Renaissance systems of perspective, artistic anatomy and chiaroscuro drawing are also explored along with the formal elements of drawing such as line, value, shape, color and texture. This course is intended for students with previous drawing experience that are interested in learning the principles of depicting the human figure. All students will be given assignments as well as a mid-term and final project, and they will be required to do in class and homework accordingly. In this course students will; therefore, build upon the techniques of depicting the live model through observation and tonal build-up, which they will perfect in order to draw the figure in a realistic context.
