DESCRIPTION

We live in a global society. Consequently, understanding the influence of the media in shaping our world view is essential - particularly with regard to issues of race/ethnicity. As such, this course will familiarize you with major topics in the study of race and the media. We will address the evolution of media images of race/ethnicity in film, television, news, and advertising, including discussions on the social conditions leading to shifts in these portrayals. Additionally, we will examine the potential impact of these images on the consumer. In particular, this class will emphasize (but will not be limited to) the three largest racial/ethnic minority groups in the U.S. -- Blacks, Latinos, and Asian Americans. We will also investigate trends in employment of minorities in the media industry.
