DESCRIPTION
Language Policy examines the interaction of politics, management, human rights and language; investigates the status of official or standard languages in relation to those of migrants and ethnic minorities; studies conflicts of dominant and dominated speakers; investigates application of EU Charter for Minority Languages throughout Europe with respect to the status of minorities and languages threatened for survival; questions resolutions of human rights of migrants and ethnic minorities with respect to mother languages; and tackles local policies and issues of political correctness with respect to linguistic and cultural diversity of gender, age, class, ethnicity and race.
Language has always mapped out boundaries of ethnic communities and been used to argue the existence of nations. The goal of the course is to provide an overview of diverse political resolutions over the institutional status of language across the continents and project future directions of current policies.
