DESCRIPTION

London, one of the world's most vibrant and cosmopolitan cities, is the media capital of Europe and also a global center for international media and communications. All major outlets have studios and correspondents in the city, and London is home to the BBC, Channel 4, Reuters, The Times, the Guardian and CNN. Newspapers, magazines, radio, TV, (e)books, digital - all are produced to as highest quality as you'd expect in a world-class capital city as well as essential international media services such as marketing, advertising and public relations.

This course looks at how current events are reported in international media with a high proportion of field experience as we attend press conferences and seminars at global corporations to see first-hand how news is produced and disseminated on various international media platforms. We analyze the various different international media outlets which operate in London from advertising agencies to digital producers and news corporations. Bringing together media practice and communications theory, this course aims to examine the ideas, influences, values, aims, methods and outputs of international media in London at the start of the new Millennium.

Much of the class discussion, analysis and activity takes place in diverse digital environments. As such, students will need smartphones with GSM connection for this course. We will explore the fast-evolving, 24-hour international media landscape in terms of digital communication, social networking, identity management, community building and citizen journalism. How do international media change the way we perceive global events? Should we be aware of their own agendas, and how this affects the way in which facts are communicated? What opportunities and threats are we faced with as individuals, international news and digital media organizations, and global businesses, regarding communication and brand/identity management? Course topics include:
